Bridge Academy, Hackney, London
Bridge Academy recreation area, Hackney, London
The Bridge Academy was built alongside the Regents Canal in 2008. The project was designed by Building Design Partnership, delivered by Mace and funded by UBS. Uniquely for the time, the project involved a central library suspended from an external tubular truss over an open central common area covered by a sloping clear ETFE facade. The rich copper coloured ceder cladding creates a distinctive ‘ark’ like structure. The seven storey building fits 15,500m² of teaching and recreational space into a tightly packed yet efficient and airy set of interconnected spaces. The project won the SCALA Civic Building of the Year Award, the ACE Engineering Excellence Award and the Bentley Success Award (Best use of BIM).
