Curve Theatre, Leicester

Curve Theatre Exterior, Leicester | Interior & Architecture Photographer London

Project Description

The Curve Theatre in Leicester by Rafael Viñoly was opened in 2008 as a replacement for the Leicester Haymarket.  The curved façade is made from 46000m² of glass and 1,192 tonnes of steel that encloses a theatre and performance space that is unique in having no conventional backstage area. Actors can be seen entering and leaving the stage to and from their dressing rooms.
Viñoly spent some time living in Leicester so that he fully absorbed the brief and location.  Curve is comparable in architectural bravery to Salfords Lowry or the Sage in Gateshead. It has two theatre spaces that can be combined, one a 400-seat studio and the other a flexible 800-seat auditorium. The structure rises 24m and the stage, backstage and smaller studio can be opened up to create one large space seating 1,300. There are two 18 tonne steel walls that can be raised between the stage and the foyer, so that the stage can be seen from street level. The glass envelope contains bars, backstage areas and open plan foyer which opens out into the café.
