The Orangery, St Thomas’s Hospital, London
The Orangery, St Thomas’s Hospital, London
Project Description
The Orangery by SPACELABUK won the RIBA award in 2005. The brief was for a ‘conservatory type building’ that could be used as a rooftop dining hall by staff and patients and as an occasional exhibition space or for events.
The zinc and wood covered fins angle upwards and allow ceiling level glazed panels to increase light. The wooden ceiling wraps round onto the walls, floor and out into the external seating area. Tatajuba, European Oak and Ash were used for their texture and warm colour.
SPACELABUK spent 24 weeks on site with a budget of £390K for the Orangery. The also built an adjacent coffee shop to a budget of £120K. The design flows from the Orangery and into the coffee shop linked by the timber flooring in the outdoor seating area.
