Sir John Cass Hall is a refurbished student accommodation building in Hackney near Hoxton, Brick Lane and Dalston. The accommodation provides rooms and modern shared amenities for residents. John Cass was a merchant, builder, politician and Sheriff of London in 1711 and was commissioner for the building of fifty new churches in the capital as well as being a significant philanthropist.
The Sir John Cass Foundation was established in 1748 which founded technical institutes specialising in Fine and Applied Art and Silversmithing that became the Sir John Cass School of Art in Whitechapel before merging with London Guildhall University and eventually forming part of London Metropolitan University in 2002.
The design for the refurbishment involved bold, primary colours for doors and partitions along with prominent area and room demarcation. Bright, eyecatching patterns applied to floor coverings also provide fun waymarkers for students to locate kitchens and other facilities.
