Project Description
Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 was constructed between 2002 and 2008 by Laing O’Rourke. The main terminal building is 396 metres long, 176 metres wide and 40 metres tall and is the largest free-standing building in the UK. It’s four levels are covered by a single-span steel frame undulating roof with glass rooflights. The area covered by the roof is the size of five football pitches and each section weighs 2,200 tonnes. The baggage handling system is the largest in the world with 5 miles of high speed track and 11 miles of regular conveyor belts designed to handle 4000 bags per hour.
