Elephant Studios at London South Bank University is a £4 million media facility designed for students in LSBU’s School of Arts and Creative Industries that were opened by former Chair of the BBC, Lord Michael Grade in June 2016.  The interior photography features the media suite that links to ten recording studios.  The studios are mechanically isolated, using ‘room within a room’ methods from the structure of the building to prevent noise transfer from nearby underground tube lines. The new facilities have created a series of studios focused upon the visual, audio and broadcast disciplines. The Newsroom provides a live TV broadcast facility with both local and global feeds that students use to create copy and broadcast pieces. Their local radio station broadcasts live from a four person studio. All surfaces within the media centre, newsroom, recording studios and preview cinema are treated with noise suppression materials. Photography and video studios have suspended track lighting so that the emphasis is upon creative output rather than setup. Elephant Studios is only one of several areas of refurbishment within London South Bank University. The new Games Design Faculty, providing training for students entering the games industry, a particular success story within the UK, has also been refurbished. See the blog post here
